House Environment Committee Hearing on HB 1646, "Clean Energy Transition Act"
The daughter of immigrant farm workers from Mexico and a former farm worker herself, Rosalinda Guillen is the Executive Director of a women-led farming labor organization in Bellingham, WA called “Community to Community Development”. Exposed as a youngster to how poorly the often undocumented farm workers are treated by an industry that wants to pay them as little as possible, she developed a strong sense of justice, and started organizing her peers to demand better treatment and adequate pay. Today she heads a unique organization that helps with mediation between workers and the industry, organizes protests and strikes if necessary, and conducts education and fundraising campaigns among the general population. More than anything, Rosalinda fights to maintain a sense of pride for an ancient occupation, farm work, that is as noble as it is humble, and that humanity simply could not do without.
