Hoy nos sentimos con el corazón destrozado por las mujeres que han venido de frente y han compartido sus experiencias de abuso, y estamos furiosos por la violencia que sufrieron a manos de César Chávez. Nos ponemos de su lado y esperamos que encuentren justicia y reparación por el daño que soportaron.
Seguimos firmemente enraizados con la comunidad de trabajadores del campo, enorgullecidos porque millones de la cual han luchado para avanzar la justicia para todo campesino/a que trabaja en los campos. Comunidad a Comunidad (C2C) se mantiene firme en nuestro compromiso con la organización y el gobierno autónomo de los trabajadores del campo, incluyendo el derecho a formar y afiliarse a una unión, incluso ante la violencia que es dirigida contra nuestras comunidades.
La idolatría de los líderes eclipsa el trabajo de miles de organizadoras y organizadores, cuyo esfuerzo colectivo es nuestra verdadera fuerza. Todos somos humanos y ninguna persona en nuestros movimientos es tan importante como para no rendir cuentas por el daño que causan, incluyendo figuras tan veneradas como César Chávez. Los trabajadores y trabajadoras entienden que sus acciones deshonraron la dignidad de todos los campesino/as que buscan apoyarse mutuamente con solidaridad y unidad, con el objetivo final de lograr un sistema alimentario justo, digno y sostenible. Nuestras victorias se apoyan en las mujeres que, debido al patriarcado, se han visto obligadas a sacrificar su bienestar, su seguridad y, en ocasiones, su dignidad para luchar por la justicia de los demás. El mundo que estamos luchando para hacer realidad es uno en el que la seguridad, la dignidad y el poder de todas las personas se afirman y protegen activamente.
Como organización ecofeminista, nos comprometemos a tener cero tolerancia hacia al acoso sexual, las agresiones sexuales y cualquier forma de violencia interpersonal en nuestros espacios y procesos.
C2C está retirando las imágenes de César Chávez de nuestras redes sociales, comunicaciones y espacios, y ya no lo presentaremos como un modelo de justicia. Seguiremos confiando en el valor de las personas que se organizan entre sí para lograr cambios justos en la industria agricola y que se comprometen a hacerlo sin violar la dignidad de ninguna compañera, compañero o persona.
Statement on Cesar Chavez
We are heartbroken today for the women who have come forward sharing their experiences of abuse and are outraged at the violence they suffered at the hands of Cesar Chavez. We stand in solidarity with them, and hope that they find vindication and justice for the hurt they endured.
We remain firmly rooted in, and proud of, the farmworker community who worked by the millions to move farmworker justice forward. We remain unwavering in our commitment to farmworker organizing, and self-governance, including the right to form and join a union, even in the face of the violence meted out on our communities.
Idolizing leaders overshadows the work of thousands of organizers whose collective effort is our true strength. We are all human and no one person in our movements is so important that they cannot be held accountable for harms they are causing, even figures as revered as Cesar Chavez. Workers understand that his actions disgraced the dignity of all workers seeking to hold up each other with solidarity and unity, for the ultimate goal of a just, dignified, and sustainable food system. Our victories stand on the shoulders of women who, because of patriarchy, have been forced to sacrifice their wellbeing, safety, and at times their dignity to fight for justice for others. The world we are working to make real is one where everyone’s safety, dignity, and power are actively affirmed and protected.
As an ecofeminist organization we commit to zero tolerance for sexual harassment, assault, and all interpersonal violence in our spaces and processes.
C2C is removing images of Cesar Chavez from our social media, communications and spaces, and will no longer hold him up as a model for justice. We will continue to trust in the courage of people who organize themselves and each other for structural change, and who commit to do so without violating the dignity of another compañera/e/o.
